Why the Holidays Can Be Overwhelming
The holiday season is filled with joy but can also be overwhelming. Between gift shopping, holiday parties, and family gatherings, it’s easy to feel drained. As I write this blog, I’m feeling completely drained and filled with anxiety because I’m trying to ‘do all the things’. That said, I do ‘try’ to listen to my own advice, but I’m not always the best student! This is a life-long journey. Here’s are some suggestions on how to manage holiday stress while embracing rest and mindfulness.
5 Ways to Slow Down and Pause in the Chaos:
- Prioritize Rest:
- Give yourself permission to take breaks. This will help lower your stress and anxiety.
- Take a nap (I’ve become a weekend napper. My body has spoken and I shall listen!)
- Even a 10 -minute pause can reset your mind.
- Set Realistic Expectations:
- Let go of perfection. Perfectly imperfect is enough.
- Focus on what truly matters to you.
- Create a “NO” List:
- Say no to events or tasks that feel draining.
- Create healthy boundaries around your time.
- Protect your energy and time.
- Practice Mindfulness:
- Use grounding techniques like the Five Senses Practice. This one ALWAYS helps me! My stress and anxiety immediately go down.
- Take mindful walks or practice deep breathing. Box breathing: 4 breaths in, pause, 4 breaths out, pause – repeat as many times as you need!
- Journal It Out:
- Write down your thoughts to clear your mind.
- Reflect on what brings you joy this season.
- Write down what you notice emotionally and physically. Your body talks to you. Try to listen. It’s the only one you’ve got!
